Letter
from the Editor;
Spring
is just around the corner and you know what that means;
people are getting their IRS tax refunds and more and more
people
are fixing up their homes. The growth in Jacksonville is
overwhelming and according to the economists this should
be a good
year overall. So I hope all of you have a great 2004.
We
at Workroom Professionals strive to make our website more
educational. www.workroomprofessionals.com
This
year we will be updating and adding more and more products
at
affordable prices. If there are any suggestions of products
you would
like to see, just let us know and we will see what can be
done about it.
Before
the next show in Baltimore we will be releasing another
educational CD. This one will be "Quick Tips and Shortcuts".
I have
had the pleasure of working with a couple of people that
each own
their own workroom. During that time I realized that our
workroom
has a lot of shortcuts and tips that make our work go faster;
that
does not mean we do not still have the excellent quality
that our
customers have come to expect. Why does this matter? In
a larger
workroom we are forced to be more production oriented. Some
people that work on their own fit their work in around children,
carpools and running a household. That is not knocking anyone,
it
is just life. However, all workrooms need to remember that
time is
money. We have a lot of overhead and therefore we need all
the time
saving tips we can find. Working with the couple of people
I have had
the opportunity to work with was great. I think in each
case we both
learned something. I suggest if you have the opportunity
to work with
another workroom you should take it. |
TIPS:
I
have picked up a few tips reading, listening to others and
from
Window Web and the Forum. Here are a few I thought were
interesting.
This
is an easier way to figure trim yardage for Swags, Cascades
and Scalloped bottoms.
1.
Swags - bottom edge Swag Width + Finished Drop + 6"
(Example
43" + 18" + 6" = 67" of trim)
2.
Cascades up to 50", leading edge. Assumes gradual angle
starts
from
bottom of swag. Finished length + 36"
(Example
44" + 36" = 80")
3.
Cascades up to 90", leading edge. Finished Length + 27"
(Example
60" + 27" = 87")
4.
Cascades up to 120", leading edge. Finished length + 18"
(Example
99" + 18" = 117")
5.
Scalloped Bottoms (Long point - short point) X the number
of
scallops
+ the valance's finished width + returns + 12" fudge
factor.
(Example
23" - 18") = 5" X 8 = 40" + 108" = 148" + 3 ½"
+ 3 ½" = 155" + 12" = 167" of trim needed)
Quick Pickup
Make a handy "thread
grabber" from
an 8" long strip of Velcro â hooks.
Simply sew the ends together to form a
circle. To use, fit it around the palm of
your hand and as you sew it will
"grab" the thread ends you cut off,
saving a mess on the floor. Clean the
"Grabber when you are finished with
each project. |

NEW PRODUCTS
We
have been adding new products to our website. We strive
to help the industry with affordable products.
This
month we have added the $99.00 long nose staple gun. This
price is good with the purchase of two boxes of staples.

staples the gun is $129.00. This gun comes with a 90-day

Encyclopedia
of Fabrications
|
The
Encyclopedia of Fabrications is now available on CD. You
still get
the dividers, the sample pages and the advertising pages
inside a binder.
This just allows you to search for and print only what
you are interested
in. When you print something, just place it in the binder.
Print as much
or as little as you want. This obviously cuts our costs,
so we cut your
costs. Available only through the Workroom Professionals
Website:

| Finally!
Our 2003 - 2004 Pricelist
is Complete! |
We
have redone our price list for the coming year. We put
our new
one into effect October 15th and it will be used until
the next October
15th. Why? We like to raise our prices when it gets really
busy. With
this current pricelist we went through and adjusted some
of the prices
where we felt the jobs were too time consuming. "If you
can't make
money on it, Don't Do It."
The
new price list is more detailed with an easier to use
layout. As
before it is in both Word and Excel. If you previously
ordered the
pricelist, we will send you another one for $15.00 plus
$3.00 S&H.
If you haven't purchased one before, they are the regular
price of
19.97 + $3.00 S & H. Just fill out the form as usual and
E-mail me
that you have version 1. We will verify it and send you
out the new one. |

Easy Pinning:
Make marking your panels
for pins easy.
Something
we do to make our marking consistent is to take an end
off a broken yardstick or use a short end on any wood
yardstick or
ruler and notch out 1/2 the width of the ruler down your
pin setting
length. For instance you would notch down 2 ½" down on
one end and
mark it with the size and the type of pin.
To
figure this out, place your pin on the ruler with the
top of the pin
to match your rod. Measure to where the top of the pin
would be. In
our case we want a 1 ½" pin set for a standard rod. Measure
down 1 ½"
then lay the pin with the top at the 1 ½" line and where
the fabric
would end up on the pin is your cutout measure. Our pin
is 1", so that
makes our cutout 2 ½".
Next fit the cut out edge
against the top of the panel where the pin is
to go and mark the inside of the pleat with a dot of disappearing
ink or
a pencil.
After they
are all marked, go back and put your pins in where
marked.
I do not
use a pinsetter, so if I need more muscle in putting the
pins
in, I just use the pin marker. To double check if your
pin is where you
want, measure from the top of your pin to the top of your
drape; you
should have 1 ½". |
|

If you have any questions you can E-mail me at:

There
has been a lot of concern about having to have Microsoft
PowerPoint to be able to run this software. Below I
have listed various
ways you can purchase PowerPoint and not have to pay
high prices to
get it. Many of you probably have PowerPoint bundled
with your Office
software and may not realize it.
Where
a price range is shown below, it reflects differing
prices
available from various retail outlets (some discount
outlets are listed
at the bottom), and an individual's specific PC requirements.
PowerPoint
for the PC - Methods of Purchasing:
1.
Microsoft Office Standard Edition - includes Word, Excel,
Outlook,
& PowerPoint
a.
New user - $355 - $399
b.
Upgrade* - $205 - $239
c.
Academic - $149
d.
Office Student upgrade - $108
*
Many PC users already have one ore more of the Microsoft
programs installed (e.g., Word or Excel) on their PC,
and can qualify
for an upgrade. The price of an Office upgrade is similar
to the price
of a standalone version of PowerPoint, so we recommend
the Office
upgrade as you get all of the other Office products
along with it.
2.
Bundled software with new PC -
a.
Microsoft Office Small Business $249 (includes Word,
Excel,
Outlook, PowerPoint)
b.
Microsoft Office Basic - does NOT include PowerPoint
3.
PowerPoint standalone (version 2002 or 2003)
a.
New user - $190 - $229
b.
Upgrade (if using an older version of PowerPoint) -
$95 - $109
